There is no single number, because the answer depends on the species, the individual animal and the specific food in your cupboard. What you can do is work out a sensible starting point and then adjust.
A reasonable process looks like this: estimate the daily energy your pet needs, convert that into a weight of food using the calorie density printed on your packaging, then watch how your pet does over the next few weeks and refine. Our Pet Food Calculator handles the first two steps for you.
Compare whatever number you get against the feeding chart on the bag or tin. If the two are far apart, recheck your inputs before you change anything about your pet’s meals.
Feeding frequency is mostly about life stage and routine rather than total intake. Young growing animals are commonly fed more often than adults, because they need a lot of energy relative to how much their stomach can hold at once.
As a general pattern, very young puppies and kittens are often fed around four times a day, dropping to about three during later growth and two as adults. Rabbits, birds and small rodents work differently again, and typically have food available in a more continuous way alongside unlimited hay in the case of rabbits.
Whatever pattern you choose, the important thing is that the daily total stays the same. Splitting food into more meals does not mean adding more food.
Yes, and it is the single biggest factor in most feeding formulas. Energy needs rise with body size, but not in a straight line.
This is why the standard equation used for dogs and cats raises body weight to the power 0.75 rather than using it directly. A dog that weighs twice as much as another does not need twice the food. In practice a 30 kg dog needs roughly 70 per cent more than a 12 kg dog, not 150 per cent more.
Because weight drives everything else, it is worth updating your estimate whenever your pet’s weight changes noticeably, such as after a check-up.
It does, considerably. A growing animal is building tissue as well as running its daily metabolism, so it needs far more energy per kilogram of body weight than a fully grown one of the same size.
Requirements generally step down as an animal matures, and often step down again in later life as activity decreases. Our calculator reflects this with a life-stage factor: for dogs it ranges from 3.0 for a very young puppy down to 1.4 for a senior, applied on top of the resting energy figure.
Age is a guide to life stage rather than a precise dial. Two dogs of the same age can be at different points depending on breed and size, which is why you can override the suggested life stage in the calculator.
Yes. An animal that spends most of the day resting burns less than one that walks, runs, works or plays for long stretches, and the difference is large enough that ignoring it will give you a poor estimate.
The Pet Food Calculator applies a modifier on top of the life-stage factor:
- Low, mostly rests indoors — 0.85
- Normal, regular daily walks or play — 1.00
- Active, long daily exercise — 1.15
- Very active, working or sporting animals — 1.35
Be honest rather than optimistic when choosing. Most companion animals sit at low or normal, and overestimating activity is one of the easier ways to end up feeding more than intended.

It runs four steps in your browser, with no data sent anywhere.
- Your weight entry is converted to kilograms.
- A daily energy figure is estimated from that weight. For dogs and cats this uses the resting energy requirement equation, 70 multiplied by body weight in kilograms raised to the power 0.75.
- That figure is multiplied by a life-stage factor and an activity modifier.
- The resulting calories are divided by the calorie density of your food to give a weight in grams.
The full method, including the factor tables, is written out on the calculator page itself, and the result panel shows the actual arithmetic used for your inputs so you can check it.
Four things, and one of them is on your food packaging rather than in your head:
- Species — dog, cat, rabbit, bird, hamster or other small pet.
- Current body weight, in kilograms or pounds.
- Age, which suggests a life stage you can then adjust.
- Calories per 100 g of the food you feed, printed on the bag, tin or pouch.
You also pick an activity level, and optionally enter a calories-per-cup figure if your packaging lists one. That last field is the only way the tool can show cups, because a cup is a volume and its weight depends on the specific kibble.
Because energy needs and food amounts are two different things, and only the calorie density of your product connects them.
The formulas estimate how many calories your pet needs per day. Turning that into grams requires knowing how many calories a gram of your food supplies, and that varies enormously. Dry food commonly sits somewhere around 300 to 450 kcal per 100 g, while wet food is often nearer 60 to 120 kcal per 100 g because so much of it is water.
If the calculator guessed an average density instead of asking, the gram figure could be wrong by a factor of three or four for anyone feeding wet food. Asking is less convenient and considerably more honest.
Grams, if you have a kitchen scale. Weight is an unambiguous measure; volume is not.
A cup of large chunky kibble and a cup of small dense kibble can differ substantially in weight, and how firmly the cup is packed adds more variation on top. Scoops that come free with food bags are rarely a standard cup either.
The calculator shows cups only when you supply a calories-per-cup number from your own packaging, because that figure is product-specific and cannot be inferred. If your bag does not list it, leave the field empty and work in grams.
It is an estimate, and it is presented as one. The equations behind it are built on population averages, so they describe a typical animal of a given weight rather than your particular animal.
Individual requirements can sit meaningfully above or below the calculated figure because of breed, metabolism, body condition, reproductive status, environment and health. None of those are inputs, and some of them could not be captured by a form even in principle.
Accuracy also varies by species. Dogs and cats use a well-established equation. Rabbits, birds and small rodents use simplified species-specific estimates and are labelled as rough on the result itself, because applying the dog and cat equation to them would produce a confident-looking number that means very little.
Treat the output as a starting point to monitor and adjust from, not as a target to hit exactly.
Because the daily calorie requirement stays the same while the calories packed into each gram do not.
Take a pet needing 700 kcal a day. On a dry food at 360 kcal per 100 g, that is about 194 g. On a richer dry food at 420 kcal per 100 g, it drops to about 167 g. On a wet food at 85 kcal per 100 g, it rises to roughly 824 g. Same animal, same energy need, three very different portions.
This is exactly why switching foods without rechecking the amount can quietly change how much your pet is actually getting, even when the scoop looks identical.
Puppies & kittens
3 questionsGrowing animals move fastest, and are the group where a fixed number is least useful.
Relative to their body weight, yes, and by a wide margin. A puppy is running its normal metabolism and building new tissue at the same time.
In the calculator this shows up as the life-stage factor. A very young puppy is estimated at around 3.0 times the resting energy figure, dropping to roughly 2.0 between four and twelve months, and settling near 1.6 for a typical adult. So a puppy can need close to double what an adult dog of the same weight would.
The catch is that a puppy’s weight is a moving target. An estimate calculated this month will be out of date next month, so recalculating after each weigh-in matters more than getting a precise number today.
They do. Kittens carry a higher life-stage factor than adult cats, around 2.5 for the youngest stage against roughly 1.2 for a typical adult, and they are usually fed more frequently because of their small stomach capacity.
Adult cats are also worth a note of their own. Neutered adult cats commonly sit towards the lower end of the estimated range, so if you are feeding a neutered adult it is especially worth watching body condition over the first few weeks rather than assuming the calculated figure is settled.
You can select a growth life stage and it will apply the higher multiplier, so the arithmetic works. Whether a single number is the right tool for a growing animal is a fairer question.
Growth is fast and uneven, requirements shift week by week, and getting it wrong during growth has more consequence than getting it wrong in a settled adult. A calculator cannot see how a puppy is actually developing.
So use it as a rough sense check between weigh-ins, keep weighing regularly, and take growth-stage feeding decisions with a veterinarian who can assess the animal in front of them.
Responsible feeding
3 questionsWhere a calculator stops being the right answer.
Read it alongside any calculator result rather than choosing between them. Each knows something the other does not.
The manufacturer’s chart is written for that exact recipe and is based on their own formulation data. What it cannot do is account for your particular pet, since it usually works in broad weight bands and assumes an average adult at a typical activity level. A calculator can take your pet’s specifics but knows nothing about the product beyond the calorie figure you type in.
Differences of ten or twenty per cent between the two are common and do not mean either is wrong. A much larger gap usually means an input needs rechecking, most often the weight unit or the calorie density.
Any time the question is about your pet’s health rather than about arithmetic. A veterinarian can examine the animal, which no website can do.
Situations that belong with a professional rather than a calculator include:
- Weight changing without an intentional change to feeding.
- Any planned weight-loss or weight-gain programme.
- Existing medical conditions, or a prescription or therapeutic diet.
- Pregnancy, nursing, recovery from illness or surgery.
- Loss of appetite, refusing food, or a sudden change in eating habits.
- Feeding a very young, very old or unwell animal.
If something looks urgent, contact a veterinarian straight away rather than researching first.
Unexpected weight change is a question for a veterinarian, not for a calculator. Weight moving without a deliberate change to feeding can have many causes, and adjusting portions on your own may mask something that needs attention.
What is useful is turning up with good information. Note the current weight and the trend over recent weeks, what food is being fed and its calorie density, how much is actually given per day including treats, and any change in appetite, energy or routine. That gives a veterinarian a far better starting point than an estimate from a website.
Where a change to feeding is genuinely planned and appropriate, make it gradually over several days rather than in one step.
